Fashion designer and Kankan store owner Karine Dupouy chats about her recent travels, her advice to young people working in fashion, and why she has no regrets in her career.
Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Many things inspire me! The beautiful patterns of the ocean viewed from a plane to the paintings of an artist like Gustav Klimt. I think as a designer you are constantly looking for inspiration and influences. My collections are very much inspired by The Seychelles – our beautiful little paradise island. There are no shortages of inspirations to draw on here.
When you are not designing, what other projects are you working on?
Social media is a very useful way for me to show case my work. So right now I am focusing on developing our Instagram platform.
I try to travel as much as possible.
I love photography which very much goes hand in hand with the travelling. I have also created an instagram account for all my travelling photos (@karinedupouy)
I also paint but it is something I am struggling to find the time to do these days. In fact I have promised myself I would do a bit more this year.
What do you enjoy doing to unwind and relax?
I love my little adventurous trips with my boyfriend. We try to go to different countries and places that don’t get a lot of publicity. Our most recent trip was to Iceland and the Baltic states but we have also been to Tibet, Burma, Madagascar, Morocco and Bangladesh recently. It really is good to get away sometimes and forget about the demands of running a business.
I also play squash which is a good sport to unwind after work and take all the stress out.
Cooking is also something I love. I guess that another way of expressing my creativity. I focus on a particular recipe and I will continue to make it over and over again until I get it just right.
If you were not a fashion designer, what other career path would you be on?
Well I think my dream would be to be paid to just travel. I’m probably not alone on that one though? If we are talking about a “proper” profession then I think I would have to say working in the creative department of an advertising company or opening a restaurant.
If your family/friends were to describe you in three words, what would they say?
Not so sure what they would say about me but the feedback I usually get is that I am rather quiet and reserved. I often get lost in my own thoughts and go into my own little zone. I probably stress out about little things that aren’t as important as I think they are also. I have to work on that one.
What piece of advice would you give to a student pursuing a career in your field?
It’s all about identifying an idea that is unique to your perspective. You won’t always get it right but keep at it. Practice makes perfect! Learn from your mistakes.
Draw or sew every little spare time you have. Be open to inspiration at all times and from all things.
If you could speak to one person in history, who would it be and why?
I think Salvador Dali and I would have got along pretty well with him.
If you had the chance to start your career over again, what would you do differently?
I wouldn’t change anything as its been a great learning process for me. It’s probably more about what I will do from now on and where I go from here. There are a lot of things I want to do in the future. So watch this space!
How would you like to be remembered?
I would like to be remembered as someone who never wasted an opportunity and lived her life to the fullest. I don’t think that you can ask more than that.
